How to Convert Military Time

Simple rules anyone can memorize

1

Morning Hours (Midnight to Noon)

Times from 0000 to 1159 are the same as standard AM time. Simply add a colon and "AM." Remove leading zeros for the hour.

0730 → 7:30 AM  |  0915 → 9:15 AM
2

Afternoon & Evening Hours (Noon to Midnight)

For times 1300–2359, subtract 12 from the hour and add "PM." Noon (1200) stays as 12:00 PM.

1700 → 17 − 12 = 5:00 PM  |  2045 → 20 − 12 = 8:45 PM
3

Converting Standard to Military

Add 12 to any PM hour (except 12 PM). Midnight is 0000. Noon is 1200. AM hours stay the same with a leading zero.

3:00 PM → 1500  |  11:30 PM → 2330  |  12:15 AM → 0015

Common Military Time Questions

Everything you need to know about military time — organized by topic

📌 Core Concepts
Military time is a timekeeping method using a 24-hour clock (0000 to 2359) instead of the 12-hour AM/PM system. It eliminates ambiguity between morning and evening hours.
The day starts at midnight (0000) and ends at 2359. Hours 00–11 represent midnight to 11:59 AM. Hours 12–23 represent noon to 11:59 PM. No "AM" or "PM" is used.
To prevent confusion and errors in scheduling, logistics, and operations where mistaking 8:00 AM for 8:00 PM could be critical.
It is standard in aviation, healthcare, emergency services, and transportation globally because it is precise and unambiguous.
It originated to streamline communication across different time zones and units without needing to specify "morning" or "night."
It simplifies calculations (no need to add/subtract 12) and reduces the risk of miscommunication in professional settings.
🗣️ Reading, Writing & Speaking
Read the first two digits as the hour and the last two as the minutes. Example: 1430 is "14 hours, 30 minutes," which equals 2:30 PM.
Look at the four-digit number. If it is less than 1200, it is morning. If it is 1200 or higher, subtract 12 from the first two digits to get the standard PM time (except 1200 itself, which is noon).
Write four digits with no colon (though colons are sometimes used in digital displays). Format: HHMM (e.g., 0900, 1730, 2300). Leading zeros are required for hours 0–9.
Exact hours: Say "hundred hours" (e.g., 1400 = "fourteen hundred hours"). With minutes: Say the numbers individually or group them (e.g., 1430 = "fourteen thirty" or "fourteen three zero"). Midnight: "Zero hundred hours" or "twenty-four hundred hours." Noon: "Twelve hundred hours."
Pronounce each digit or the hour/minute groups clearly. 0800 is "zero eight hundred." 1545 is "fifteen forty-five."
Start of the day: 0000 — "zero hundred hours." End of the day: 2400 — "twenty-four hundred hours," used mostly in schedules to denote the end of a shift or day.
1200 — pronounced "twelve hundred hours."
0000 (start of day) or 2400 (end of day). Both are acceptable in military time.
🔢 Calculation & Conversion
AM to Military: Keep the time the same, but ensure it is 4 digits (add a leading zero if needed). Remove "AM." Example: 7:15 AM → 0715. PM to Military: Add 12 to the hour. Remove "PM." Example: 3:15 PM → 1515. Exception: 12 PM stays 1200.
Count continuously from 00 to 23 for hours, then 00 to 59 for minutes. Unlike standard time, it does not reset at 12.
Take your current standard time. If it is PM (and not 12 PM), add 12 to the hour. Format as 4 digits. Example: If it is 2:45 PM, it is 1445. You can also check the live clock at the top of this page for your current military time.
Visualize a clock that goes from 0 to 23 instead of restarting at 1. Morning is 00–11; Afternoon/Evening is 12–23.
🧠 Learning & Memorization
Memorize the key pivot points: 1200 (Noon), 1300 (1 PM), 1800 (6 PM), 2000 (8 PM). For any PM time, just remember "Plus 12."
Use the rule: "If it's PM, add 12." Repeat conversions aloud until it becomes natural.
Create flashcards for common times (e.g., 0800, 1700, 2300) and quiz yourself. Set your phone to 24-hour format and practice daily.
Ignore the "AM/PM" mental switch. Just look at the number. If it's over 1200, you know it's afternoon or evening — subtract 12 to get the standard hour.
🌍 Global Context & Variations
Almost every country uses the 24-hour clock officially — including the UK, Australia, most of Europe, Asia, and South America. The US and Canada primarily use 12-hour time culturally but use 24-hour time in military, medical, and technical fields.
Zulu Time is another name for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). It is the standard time used by the military and aviation worldwide to synchronize operations across different time zones. "Z" stands for Zero meridian. It is often written as 1400Z.
